The term of Latin origin Abstractus, meaning "pointless", gave the name to one of the trends of art – abstractionism or Abstract art. This style is characterized by the fact that it consciously does not perceive images of the real world and real objects which surround it.
Abstractionism style can be considered not so much a separate genre or the direction, but as an association of the most diverse trends in art. The main paradigm of abstract art is considered to be the reflection of feelings, emotions and other manifestations with the help of unique symbols, certain images or original tonal combinations.
Abstract art, that is in other words – nonfigurative art, coincided with the last school of modernism by the time of its appearance. It appeared as the full-fledged movement in the 10th years of the last century.
At the same time, there was also another name of this art direction – pointlessness, which is explained by the fact that the participants of this genre absolutely reject the image of different objects in creativity. In this way, an artist from the Netherlands, Piet Mondrian, who was considered the founder of neoplasticism, came to abstract art. He sincerely believed that the true reality is created only through real plastics. Later, Mondrian was fond of cubism, using these methods of drawing in the form of lines on the surface. In Holland, which is the artist's homeland, gradually appeared a great number of his followers, whom he could group around the periodical "Style". The content of the journal presupposed the appearance of a worldview, which has a certain character, created with the help of multicolored rectangles separated by a rough line of black color. Thus, a huge number of different compositions began to appear, instead of names with letters and numbers. The equilibrium position of the various lines actually captured the artist, leading to the state of the cult. In 1924 he has stopped the relations with "Style" magazine without regret only because the magazine allowed to give 45-degree corner in the form of a component of expressive language.
In subsequent years, Mondrian's main positions were supported by Italian concretists, who began to rely entirely in their creations on the assertion that in the world there is nothing more accurate than color in conjunction with geometric proportions. Thank to them, it began to appear in the art quite different movements, showing different geometric elements, having a variety of bright colors.
It is worth saying that this style became popular all over the world. Russian abstract oil paintings are not the exception. Vasily Kandinsky, another participant of abstractionism, created his masterpieces in this style still much more before cubists. The native of the city of Moscow, Vasily initially studied as the lawyer, but in the late eighties he came to study graphic creativity in A. Azhbe's school, in Munich. Having studied here for two years, and later, for 1900 in Academy of arts, at the German painter and the sculptor F. von Stuk, he was fond of folklore art, fauvists and Gauguin. A variety of interests and keenness of his nature gave him the chance to open a group "the Blue Rider" together with F. Mark in 1911. In his abstract oil paintings he demonstrates a deviation from the images of nature and nature to the objects and phenomena of nature that go beyond the usual framework. He paid special attention to the combination of music and color. The development of symbolism had a great influence on the work of Kandinsky. This is why theorists explain his association of black with death, white - with the appearance of a living being in the world, and red - with courage. According to the same theory, passivity denotes a horizontal line, and activity is vertical. The researchers note that Kandinsky can be attributed to the participants of the literary and psychological symbolism of the final stage, and also to abstract artists in the initial period of this genre. He himself wrote in the work "The Artist's Text" assertion that objectivity harms his paintings.
At this time, Kandinsky drew in his pictures incomprehensible spots of colorful shades, crossed out by wavy, disordered lines, which sometimes looked something like hieroglyphics. Written, at first glance, as if by the hand of a child, they were closer in technique to Klee's canvases. On closer examination, we can say that Kandinsky's works are similar to photo effects, fixed with the help of paints. This approach to art, if considered according to Mondrian, was a real violation of all rules.
In 1914, the artist lives in Russia, there, along with like-minded people, organizes the Museum of Pictorial Culture in St. Petersburg, and later the Moscow Institute of Art Culture. After the forced move to European Germany, he finds new hobbies for himself, one of which is geometric abstractionism - a special form of drawing. In 1933, he had to move to the homeland of the Champs-Elysées, since the fascists were in charge in Germany. There he lives the rest of his life. His most extreme works are marked by a combination of the position of geometric abstract art and painting.
Kazimir Malevich quite naturally is considered to be one more of the most famous founders of abstractionism. Nowadays thanks to modern technologies people can enjoy Russian abstract art online all over the world and from every place of the world.
Malevich also managed organically to reunite the geometric Cezanne abstractionism from Mondrian and Impressionism from Kandinsky. Based on these directions, Malevich organized a new course of avant-garde abstractionism - suprematism, the name of which was given by the word of French origin - supreme, denoting "superior".
During his studies at the Kiev School of Arts, then at the School of Painting, Architecture and Sculpture in Moscow, the artist showed an interest in many styles of fine art. He was very much carried away by Impressionism, after - Cubism, and in the tenth years of the last century his work was significantly influenced by the futurists Boccioni and Carr. 1913 year was marked by the provision for public view of the famous "Black Square" created by the special system, which he himself called dynamic Suprematism. This picture, depicting the usual square of black coloring on a light background, was remembered by admirers of artistic creativity as the highest reflect of extremes in modernism. In new works the author claims that the artist is a relic of the past, and Suprematist painting simply does not have to exist. However, later in the 30-ies Malevich still begins to draw in a style of realism, using incidentally the subject of the USSR. His painting "A girl with a red shaft" is a testament to this fact.
It should be noted that Natalia Goncharova and Mikhail Larionov are considered to be the main representatives of the so-called rayism - another direction of abstract art. At the same time, Larionov argued that the main goal of the author of the picture should be finding of certain points in which the rays converge, representing picturesque bright lines, because, according to his opinion, all objects in the world look like the points of refraction of these rays.
After a while many representatives of abstract art move from the European countries to the United States of America – as Nazis come to the power. In 1937 in the American New York, it was created the museum of the corresponding drawings with the help of the millionaire Gugenkheym's family, and in 1939, it was founded the Museum of Modern Art with the assistance of Rockefeller. During the war in the 1940s in the United States, all the progressive representatives of the art of genre were concentrated there, which at the end of hostilities remained in the USA.
The period after war was marked by unprecedented scope of the second wave of development of abstract art, one of leading roles was played at the same time by the developing advertizing. Mass capital investments in creations of abstract artists begin. At that time the artist Jackson Pollock becomes the real star of this art direction. Thanks to him, the drawing technique called dripping becomes popular, scattering of the smallest drops of coloring material on a canvas without using the brush. In the US, this genre was called abstract impressionism, in England it was called action painting, in France this method was called tashism, and the Italians called this direction nuclear painting.
At the beginning of the last century, the development of the style of abstraction was somewhat suspended, since in the post-war period the position of the realistic direction of art increased slightly. By the end of the 40s, there was again a union of abstractionists, who began to act as a united front under the leadership of Michel Seifor and Leon Degan, who were considered theorists of the direction. In the fifties development of abstractionism leads to universal interest in this art. A lot of people buy abstract oil paintings, because they look amazing in modern interiors.
